·     Diaspora through essay of Salman Rashdie’s ‘The imaginary homelands’.

·      Introduction:-

The field of Postcolonial Studies had obtained importance since the time of 19th century. Some would date its rise in the Western academy from the publication of Edward Said’s influential critique of Western constructions of the Orient in his book. The Development of currency through the academy of the term “postcolonial”  which was combined with the appearance in’ The ‘Empire Writes Back’ During that time theory and Practice in Post-Colonial Literatures by Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths, and Helen Tiffin. So that the use of associated terms of ‘Commonwealth’ and ‘Third World’ that were used to describe the literature of Europe’s former colonies had happen in rarely.

The lionization of Diaspora writers like Slman Rashdie  for best example of that.He might be seen as a privileging of the transnational, migrant sensibility at the expense of more local struggles in the postcolonial.

Some of the best known names in Postcolonial literature and for the  theory  like as there are those of Chinua Achebe, Homi Bhabha, Edward Said, Buchi Emecheta, Jamaica Kincaid, Gayatri Spivak, Salman Rashdie,Frantz Fanon…etc.  A more comprehensive although by no means exhaustive list may be found under the distinct categories listed in the menu at the top of this page.

·       Some Examples of film:-

Shyam Benegal, Gurinder Chadha, Claire Denis, Shekhar Kapoor, Srinivas Krishna, Farida Ben Lyazid, Ken Loach, Deepa Mehta, Ketan Mehta, Mira Nair, Peter Ormrod, Horace Ove, Pratibha Parmar, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen…etc.

·       What is Diaspora?:-

                               According to meaning of Dictionary,
“…A Diaspora is a large group of people with a similar heritage or homeland who have since moved out to places all over the world.”

The term Diaspora taken from an ancient Greek. This word meaning is that "to move off about." And that's what the people of a Diasporas to doing properly. They all lived to separated from their homeland to another places across the planet and they try to spreading their culture, tradition and thoughts as where they are wondering. I am not say surly that but reference of religion book The Bible refers to the Diaspora of Jews exiled from Israel by the Babylonians. But we know that nowadays the word is now also used more generally to describe any large migration of refugees, language, or culture. Here I have to say that Diaspora has two chief reasons for responsible the happening that like as, diffusion and dissipation.

A)    Decolonization:-

At a time of World War II the idea of Diaspora had multiplication to an extraordinary area. Everything happening for specific behind reason and event. One of the reasons for Diaspora is that development was decolonization. Decolonization also led to the removal and by force remigration of many groups like as especially those of Asian origin for example, ‘Ethnic Chinese’ in Indonesia and Vietnam or South Asians in East Africa.
B)    International Recognition of displaced:-
There have been exiled in history as long as there times of wars, plagues and famines. But formal recognition by the UN brought new attention to the problem. Today the various UN agencies classify 15 million people as displace.
C)      International Migration:-
The massive scale of contemporary international migration leads some commentators to proclaim an Age of Diaspora. If the 217 million people currently classified as international migrants moved to an unoccupied country.
·      Salman Rashdie:-
Salman Rashdie was born at Bombay in 1947. The Indian writing in Ennglish Rashdie was most controversial writer among He began his educational life at Cathedral and John Connor School in Mumbai. He was sent to Rugby school in England. He produced his first novel “ Grimus” at the time of his employment at the firm. And he was more famous for his another book “ Midnight Children” which was win the Booker prize in 1981.His book published upon the title of ‘ Imaginary Homeland’ which was one of the collection of his essay whose written by him between 1981 to 1992. The root of “ Imaginary Homelands” shown in the indo Anglian seminar at London.
·      His major themes:-

A)Cosmopolitanism
B)   Diasporic Consciousness
C) Literature and memory
D)   Post colonialism
E) Nationalism
F) Post modern
Salman Rashdie is one of the Indian writer and also known for diasponic writer. May be he belong to India and nowadays he is living in London. He has specific ability to write with characteristic of diasporic way. In that type of writer may be who ws away from homeland and try to mention another homeland.
·       “Imaginary Homelands”:-

This book almost divided into six parts like as,
1)  Midnight’s children
2) Poetics off Indi and Pakistan
3) Indo-Anglian Literature
4) Movie and Television
5) Experience of migrants – Indian migrants to Britain
6) Thatcher/ Flout of election- Question of Palestine.

In the first essay of ‘Imaginary Homelands’ Rashdie described a description memories of ‘Past’ and ‘Present’ because this essay opening with memory of an old photograph but I can’t say that who’s was in photograph? We know that old things also connected with pastiness, emotions and specific events. Same happen here In the essay he says that “The Past is a foreign country but through use of old photograph represented to turn around that thoughts clearly. He added that it was reminded again him that it was his present time that was foreign and here mentioned on past. It means that he lost his home and town or city which also connected with him. May be he felt suffering through lost those things. So here why was he remembering all that kind of thing? Because of he missed a lot. He missed Bombay where he was born and playing on street. So that he has ambition of revisiting all past places, person…etc. When he wondering into his home, he found one documents and telephone diary. There were he found his father’s migration who leads to him past and also present so Salman Rashdie said with certain prospectively that “ My India “. Here used of word “ My” which used for saying own tight relation to tell other. He almost said that, My India has only one which I was,let us say something, willing to admitted when I belonged.

·      Diaspora into “Imaginary Homelands”:-

We know about Salman Rashdie’s diasporic writing. So that types of clue points I can found in his book “Imaginary Homelands”. It’s reflected something feeling of belonging from somewhere. When we go away from specific place then we realized what is important of that place? There are same happening in relationship often.  Another thing is that when we feel unsecure our life at that time we remembered those things which we lost. Here Rushdi’s life and experiences represented through this essay.  His life covered with full of experienced of marginalized because When he stayed at Bombay at that time he lived with marginalized group and society. Another thing is for happening that he belongs to as Muslim family then as a Pakistani and nowadays he is playing as a roll of British Asian. So that he has not proper roots which he can declare. In age of Digital era in Britain government who not give nationality of him as a membership of British. So he had not good experiences as he wrote into the essay “New Empire within new Britain”.

As a Diasporic writer he faced lot of problem but he can’t claim in front of them when he belonging to the country and they generally try to forcefully leave country. Moreover they can’t completely do mingle with new world because he has past memory which doesn’t permit to him for doing that. Diasporic person’s condition like holding alone among two nations, two cultures, two languages so that as a diasporic person he lost own real identity.

·      Conclusion:-

Thus Salman Rashdie  try to gives his critical views on various subjects with use of whooping theory. In this topic he had try to opened all facts about own and other country and problem of political, education, religion system. So here he has good ability to way of looking Diaspora In ‘Imaginary homelands’ Salman Rushdie experienced the feeling of banishment throughout his life. His root in a country greatly influenced by British rule and his migration to England have helped develop to a double perspective/ consciousness which gave him “stereoscopic vision”(Imaginary Homelands, 1991). Rushdie portrays the plight of estrangement and alienation of the migrants who do not have any future. They have the freedom of wandering to wherever they wish to, but should not have any emotional attachment to these places. Rushdie himself experienced the feeling of banishment because he grew up in a country greatly influenced by British rule. He also attended British schools and migrated to England. He admits that postcolonial Indian writers who have migrated away from India “are capable of writing from a kind of double perspective : because they, we, are at the one and same time insiders and outsiders in this society. This stereoscopic vision is perhaps what we can offer in place of “whole sight.” (I H, 19) Rushdie states, “When the Indian who writes from outside India tries to reflect that world, he is obliged to deal in broken mirrors, some of whose fragments have been irretrievably lost.” (I.H., 11)The multiple backgrounds and experiences, make them feel at home nowhere, ultimately creating a sense of isolation. The cultural displacement of the diaspora creates a double identity for them which are at the same time singular, plural and partial. In ‘Imaginary Homelands’, Rushdie writes : “Our identity is at once plural and partial. Sometimes we feel that we straddle two cultures, at other time we fall between two stools.

·      Moral guilt by male and female Characters with references of “The Scarlet Letter”.

·       Introduction:-

We all are living in particular society and Society working with specific moral value. So that May be you have question pop up in your mind that what is morality? Who is creating moral rights? How it’s work for society? It’s necessary nowadays? Are you happy or not through morality? May be many time morality create stress into the mind. In today’s time there are many people live without morality although they have happiness and they also achieved success in life.  Don’t worry; just now put idea into mind but here I talk about Puritan morality which used for Justifiable of sin and punishment. So let’s me know with references of the novel “The Scarlet Letter”.

·       What is Morality?:-

According to meaning of Dictionary that It is the distinction between good and bad things which depend on particular behavior so that it’s make human being ethically well. Here in the definition I can’t find particular boundary for male and female. But Society almost define own ways. We can say that it is the power whose has created that kind of rights and rules for their self benefit and self motives not for society.  It is also created morality according to the power and crucial questions are that for male and female morality remains different. It’s seems that in India has patriarchy whose still rules in today’s time and as a result of it women has to suffer a lot into community.

·       Moral rules for men and Women:-

In our society create different kind of moral rules which mostly based on gender. In India generally we find patriarchal society and masculine power in family. So that Masculine power rules on female with rigid principles. Many time we loss great and good person for reason of morality. Am I right? Although patriarchy exists within the scientific atmosphere, the periods over which women would have been at a physiological disadvantage participation in hunting through being at a late stage of pregnancy or early stage of child rearing would have been short. In the time of the Nomads, patriarchy still grew with power. Leonine and others argue that such biological determinism unjustly limits of women. They gave statement that women not behave a certain way because of they are biologically inclined rather than men because they are judged by the stereotypical local image of formality.

In our society women can’t think without permission of men even on their own ways so that they all time have to depend on the male.  They have not freedom to behave own way but they have to remain in under the male power and society’s value. There are so many fields where they can’t go so we can say that whole process of women is in the hands of patriarchal power. Same happening In puritan society that Women could not speak against religion & priest. They live life like hell because If sin becoming by male so that society disaffirmed easily but It’s becoming by female so that society punished with cruelty. They hated and misbehaved with them.

·      The Scarlet Letter:-

A)               Hester’s guilt was total and unquestionable:-

Here the thought of Hester seems to be that she is an individual so that the individual has the right to deny or questioning the traditional morality of his or her society. If I saw puritan ethic’s point of view that was appropriate situation in Hester’s case because she has sinned against the particular authority. Moreover In Christian book of Bible said seven types of sin so here one of the sin of Adultery happened by Hester. As a adulteress has sinned against the dominion of god and lost his favor forever by puritan society. The Puritan Society looks at Hester with rigidity. Hester had sinned unredeemable and she almost may be made for self-punishment through her badge of Shame which always reminding her guilt whenever she went. How it’s terrible condition for her? May be I have limitation to think of unconscious mind of Hester. So she lived terrible life with guilt.

B)              Double Punishment:-

She was suffering in one of the self-punishment then Suddenly She faced another problem of Pearl’s presence which continually reminds her another sin. She was like alone ship among the thunder of sea. During that time Puritan Society announced about its commandment over the particularly individual conscience through forced her to accept her sin and self punishment. In the novel Chapter number V mentioned that Hester also try to refuse her punishment through way of running alone. May be Hester succeed on her condition by her needle work. The dust of Hester and Dimmesdale was not allowed to intermix even after the death of those two. May be Puritan Society had forgiven them but if their vindication on the hand of God. At that time Puritan ethic was carried out in the book in that respect. I think that “ The Scarlet Letter ” focus on more debatable point of women role So here it’s not only one way of looking book but we find many way of looking book. It is my interpretation so there are many way comprehension way of possibility.

C)               Hester was sinful creature but who was perfect among us? Who is Capable of judging her?:-

Jean Calvin was a eternal sinfulness of man in history of Christian more famous for Christian follower. During that time Calvin mentioned that everybody felt eternally guiltiness in the existence in front of God. They all believed that preservation came through only power of god. Here I notify that in ‘The Scarlet Letter’ most of the figure of men was felt guilty. If I am not wrong we all are sometime felt shamefulness. So we don’t have capacity of judging Hester. However Dimmesdale and Chilling worth felt guilty of examine properly in the depth of the heart of human. In chapter XVII, As Dimmesdale put it and Chilling worth had violated in cold blood and godliness. In Chapter V Hester had expansion sympathetic instinct for the as a sinners in Boston. Hester could understood sinfulness in society Whom it may be last expected of community. All that shows a Boston, society of puritan that was not able for judging figure of Hester because all that it members were sinful in one way or the other way.

D)              Hester sinned against Dimmesdale’s morality but not against her own, here morality is like relative:-

During that time issued of faithfulness in religious morality was less important rather than individual moral sense. So here I known that Hester had private morality which was corrected rather than social morality was completely wrong there. The significance on the individually appropriate here in typically 19th century. In that situation may would be that Hester had offended as a social or moral code but other figures of the novel like Dimmesdale, chilling worth, Bellingham and other unnamed people. Although if a whole society was corrupted or sinful  so that individual whose moral sense made him for his penance  and Another thing reflect that he has own personal morality against of whole society. Here another interesting point is that She also still wear the letter “ A” but the meaning of the word has now changed from ‘ Adulteress’ to ‘ Able’ or ‘ Angel’. She is good puritan women who have been true to her own self ordained punishment. She also felt for her sin both through the Scarlet letter and the child pearl but she never torture herself as Dimmesdale doing.

E)                Hester also followed her truest human instinct So that she committed no sin at all and nor does she consider herself as a sinner:-

Here in the novel we can find reflection and adaptation of the 19th century society. During that time started movement of individual freedom which proved here in the novel through character of Hester. Same themes presented in 19th century’s novel through  figures like as Tess, Bathsheba, Everdene, Madame Bovary and Dorothea Brooks who faced same problem. Hester almost completed what her truest instinct like search of love and affection and she had guided her to doing but there were great mistake to do adopt that situation. Here in the novel Character of Hester was not presented as a beloved of Dimmesdale but presented as broken morality. We can’t say with confidently that her motive for falling in love with Dimmesdale.  According to my point of view that Hester was a brave woman who resolute resists the desire of the becoming as a free thinker like as Ann Hutchinson. Moreover Hester never consider herself as a sinner at all would be totally false. As we know that in the novel she declines to remove the scarlet letter on an order from the society. Hester also afraid of the criticism of the puritans and her lover and husband in chapter V which watched that she was confessed her sin and guilt. So that here I have to say that Hester has own private morality which was not subservient to the social morality of the puritan society but here we know that Hester did not consider herself as a sinner.

F) Consequences of Sin and Guilt:-

In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne is not overly concerned with the sin that has been committed; he is more concerned with the results of the sin, with its effect on the persons involved. The Christian view however, is that the sin itself as well as its effects are to be considered. God regards man's motives. And to him motives are important. Furthermore, the Bible condemns sin in all its forms.

Hawthorne shows the woman suffering public shame and contempt, the sensitive and disturbed minister who hides his participation in the sin withering inside, and the jealous old man, Chillingworth, addicted by the madness of revenge. Turner states that the author's "basic assumption is that reward and punishment are inevitable here and now--retribution for sin is certain" (58). Although many critics view Hester in a positive way, some liberal one sees her as degenerating spiritually since her thoughts are on earthly love as is clear in her conversation with Dimmesdale during their meeting in the forest. It is also said that she "handles her guilt more successfully than Dimmesdale because her conscience is less highly developed than his" (Crews 143). Those who see her positively emphasize the transformation that she undergoes. Over the course of the years, she becomes involved in performing acts of charity and kindness to people in the community and shows her care and concern for the sick, the poor and the dying. Hawthorne observes that ". . . in the lapse of the toilsome, thoughtful, and self-devoted years that made up Hester's life, the scarlet letter ceased to be a stigma which attracted the world's scorn and bitterness, and became a type of something to be sorrowed over, and looked upon with awe, yet with reverence" (chapter 24).

·       Some Quotations of feel guilt:-

1)  “Let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will be always in her heart.”
(Balu)
2) “[S]he saw that, owing the peculiar effect of this convex mirror, the scarlet letter was represented in exaggerated

There are no sources in the current document.

3)gigantic proportions, so as to be greatly the most prominent feature of her appearance.”

4) “Mother!—Mother!—Why does the minister keep his hand over his heart?”

5) “It is inconceivable, the agony with which this public veneration tortured him!”
5) “All the dread of public exposure, that had so long been the anguish of his life, had returned upon him.”

·      What is Modern literature ? with Characteristics of Modern age.

vIntroduction:-

This period sees the end of the reign of Queen Victoria and of the stability which the country had so long enjoyed. The shock administered by the Boer War to the later years 0f the reign helped to divert attention from the cruder conceptions of imperial expansion to social problem at home. There ensued a period of sweeping social reform and unprecedented progress.

vGeneral characteristics of the age:-

The modern age has fairly distinctive or unique characters. It transformed the whole fabric of private and social life and wrought a revolutionary change in the thought and outlook of the English nation. It is one of the most turbulent eras in the history of English literature. It marks a sharps and clear departure from the self-complacency, compromise and stability of the Victorian period. The change from the old to the new, from blind faith to rational thinking is very interesting. The following traits distinguish the modern era:

1) Anxiety and Interrogation:-

We know that modern age has own characteristic and it has known through different name So here it was called the age of anxiety and interrogation. The scientific revolution and rational thinking had shaken man’s faith in the authority of religion and church and the established order. The old restraints and heroes were rejected and the generation claimed unfettered freedom of thought and action. Thinkers like Shaw, Samuel Butler and Wells assumed the role of social heretics and iconoclasts. Men and women showed an extraordinary enthusiasm for speculation, experiment and reform.

The modern man does not accept anything unless it is tested on the touchstone man of reason. The mood of the persistent skepticism and interrogation has increased disproportionately for want of a new set of values. Moreover, modern industrial and technical progress has to given birth to the spirit of competition. Everybody wants to come out successful in the rat race but only a few are crowned with laurels. This failure coupled with the complexities of modern life has resulted in frustration, anxiety and cynicism.

2)  Art for life’s sake:-

They evolved the creed of art’s for life’s sake’ or at least, for the sake of the community. The writers concentrated their attention on the problem of modern life. So modern literature is full of realism and has an inherent purpose. The realism of modern age has further been enhanced by scientific discoveries.

W.H. Hudson writes: “In these circumstances many writers became convinced that literature was useless if it did not serve a definite social and political purpose, and those who failed to share this conviction were thought to be sulking in the ivory tower of mere literary art.”

The poetry and prose of this period turned to a serious mood and had a definite purpose. The rapid growth of science and materialism disgusted many poets and writers. Butler and Huxley are the prominent writers of the modern age, who have attacked in their works the modern craze for materialism and machinery. The rise of the problem is a significant development in the realistic literature of the modern age.

3)  Growing interest in the poor and the working Classes:-

The year 1900 marks “the beginnings of the supremacy of the middle classes, and middle- class standards of thought and writing. The sorry condition of the poor living along with the affluent sections of society aroused the desire to take collective action to improve the living conditions of the poor working classes. The poor were no more helpless creatures. They had grown conscious of their sad predicament. They posed a great challenge to the social conscience. They became the raw material of realistic novel and drama with or without purpose. The mid- Victorian writers,  Dickens. Thackeray, Kingsley, Reade, Mrs. Gaskell etc. were critical of the fundamental bases of human life and society as were Galsworthy and slaw. They merely anticipated the spirit of interrogation and rational inquiry.

4)  Impact of Socio- economic conditions on Literature :-

The literature of the twentieth century has been greatly influenced by economic and social changes. The disintrogation of the village community, which was necessitated by rapid industrialization, and its profound human implications have been mournfully expressed in the writings of Hardy, Jefferies, Edward Thomas and others. The new economic theories of Marshall and Keynes, who raised their voice against poverty, changed the pattern of economic thinking. Literature became urbane. Marxism was the most powerful influence on literature. Various manifestations old socialism came into existence and influenced the authors.

5)  Psychology and literature:-

New psychological researches influenced literature. Freud put great emphasis on the power of the unconscious to affect conduct. Intellectual convictions appeared to be rationalizations of emotional needs. The growing interest in psychology exercised considerable influence on literature. The ordered emphasis on sex behavior was completely changed and a rational view of sex relationship was evolved. The modern age may be termed as the age of rationalization in sexual behavior.  The rightness of sexual union outside the pale of marriage was accepted. Sex was considered to be amoral G. B. Shaw in Man and Superman and Candida exposed the error in the conventional assessment of the relative roles of the sexes.

6)        The impact of the two World Wars:-

The first half of the present century was completely overshadowed by two wars. The post-war period was an era of “depression” and of want and unemployment. The two world wars, especially the second, had a devastating influence on man and human life. A large number of anti-war books were written during and after the two wars. C.E.Montagu’s Disenchantment, Fiery Particles and Rough Justice, Richard Aldington’s Death of A Hero and Edmund Blunden’s The Undertones of war, and the poems of Wilfred Owen and Sassoon expose the futility and hollowness of war.

7)  International Character of Literature:-

The Literature of the Victorian era was mainly preoccupied with the condition of England, and was permeated by a spirit of non-violent humanitarianism. But the literature of the early decades of the twentieth century has an international character.

8) The influence of Radio, Cinema and Television:-

The development of radio, cinema and television had an enormous impact on literature. In the words of Edward Albert:” In so far as the radio brought literature into the home, in the form of broadcast stories, plays and literary discussions and opened up an entirely new field for authors, its influence was for the good. At the same time it must be remembered that film techniques were the basis of a number of experiments in the novel.”

9)   The Spread of Education:-

The full effects of the education Act of 1870 strengthened by the Act of 1902 began to make it felt in the pre- War years. The ladder of educational opportunity, from elementary school to university, was now available to the poorest boy who had the ability to take advantage of it and literary became the normal rather than the unusual thing.

10)Enormous output of Books:-

Authors and publisher were not slow to supply the public with what it wanted, and books poured from the presses with astonishing rapidity. Among them were numerous ‘pot- boilers’ by inferior writer’s intent only on financial gain. Even some great artists failed to resist the temptation of over-rapid and over-frequent production and of too many of them it may be said that they wrote too much. The sacrifice of art to business was not new it had affected adversely some of the work of Dickens- but in our period the commercialization of literature was carried to unprecedented limits, and the problem has continued to grow.

11)     The Literature of Social purpose:-

The spread of literacy was accompanied by the awakening of the national conscience to the evils resulting from the Industrial Revolution. More than ever before would-be reformers pinned their faith on the printed word and on the serious theatre as media for propaganda, and the problem or discussion play and the novel of social purpose may be described as two of the typical literary products of the period.

12)    The rebirth of Drama:-

After a hundred years of insignificance drama again appears as an important literary form, and the thirty years under review see men of genius, who are also practical, experienced men of the theatre, creating a live and significant drama out of the problems of their age. Like the novelists most of the important dramatists were chiefly concerned with the contemporary social scene and though toward the end of the period there are signs of a revival of poetic drama, prose is the normal medium.

v Conclusion:-

The literature of the new ane is the literature of challenge and of the reconstruction of new values. Scott James writes: “The writings, expressive of many temperaments, reveal the intellectual atmosphere in which G.B. Shaw, H.G. Wells, Arnold Bennett, John Galsworthy, G.K. Chesterton were to find their essential and necessary milieu. In one sense men were being made by their time and in another they were making it. Against this background too, we must set quieter and more reflective spirits, like Henry James, Joseph Conrad and number of poets. It is “an exciting age for writers an age which marked a definite break with the past, a challenges to authority, an assertion in the right to be anarchistic in thought and inform- romantic, realistic, passionate- a self conscious age when writers were intensely critical of the individual soul.”

Thank you…
